What data will the air monitoring project around D8 bring?

On March 20, 2024, the final conference of the project „The impact of traffic on air pollution within the TEN-T route Ústí nad Labem – Mělník – Zdiby“, abbreviated as TENT Air supported by the Norwegian funds, will take place at the Masaryk Cultural House in Mělník from 10 am to 1:30 pm.

The project has been monitoring air pollution sources around the D8 motorway, specifically in Zdiby in Mělník and in Ústí nad Labem since 2022. The main objective was to determine the predominant type of pollution, including pollutant concentrations, and to identify the source of this pollution.

The leader of the project was the University of Mining and Metallurgy – Technical University of Ostrava, represented by Mgr. Jiří Bílek, Ph.D., which has many years of experience in the field of air cleanliness.

The project partner is Norsk Energi, a Norwegian consulting company providing services in the field of energy, environment and safety. Norsk Energi’s task is to incorporate meteorological conditions into an air pollution propagation model. This gives us an idea of the movement of these hazardous substances in selected locations. As there are usually thousands of measured data, the map interpretation is a simplified but nevertheless necessary comprehensive view. It is thus a logical follow-up to the Czech part of the project.

The project outputs and measures are incorporated into the cities‘ action plans. The cities involved in this project will receive valid data necessary for the quality and sustainable development of their territory.

The aim of the conference is to present the project, its outputs and measures included in the action plans of the cities to the representatives of the cities, experts and the general public.

The conference will also present follow-up projects of the Norway Grants focused on measures to improve air quality. Specifically, the five projects are:

  • Implementation of green measures to protect air quality in the city of Mělník 1st stage
  • CLEAN AIR, Sensors for Mělník
  • Protective green system Zdib STAGE II – Centre site – SITUATION vegetation elements
  • Zdib protective greenery system STAGE II – outer ring site – LANDSCAPED vegetation elements
  • Corridor D8, local air quality measurements with emphasis on domestic heating issues, Central Bohemia Region
  • Corridor D8, local air quality measurement with emphasis on domestic heating, Ústí nad Labem Region

„It is almost unbelievable that thanks to its involvement in the TENT Air project, the City of Mělník managed not only to obtain a follow-up 10 million subsidy for planting greenery in the city, but also to plant it before the end of the project itself,“ adds City Councillor Ing. Jan Rohlík.

The conference is open to the professional and general public. You can register by email: info@tentair.cz until 12 March 2024 at the latest.
